Geography Intent Statement

Geography is to understand the physical world and its people by developing as geographers.

In our teaching, we aim to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography; providing a broad, balanced curriculum ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills.  We want the children to develop a love for geography and be inspired to be curious and fascinated about the world and its people.

To achieve this the children will develop the essential characteristics of geographers by:

  • Investigating a range of places – both in Britain and abroad – to know where places are and what they are like

  • Developing an extensive base of geographical knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes

  • Developing and using appropriate geographical vocabulary

  • Developing excellent fieldwork skills

  • Learning the skills of interpreting a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, atlases, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  • Increasing the ability to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding

  • Expressing well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment

  • Developing an understanding of the way that places are interdependent and interconnected

  • Developing an understanding of how the human and physical features of a place shapes its location and can change over time

  • Having opportunities to incorporate and enhance literacy and mathematical skills in real world contexts through lessons.
